The old Hudson Maxim School at the corner of Lakeside Boulevard and River Styx Road in Hopatcong Borough stood vacant for a number of years. The school building was in disrepair and slowly deteriorating over time. It is a prominent location and had been the subject of investigations by various entities to determine how best to reuse the site.

Being an old public school, the building was very well suited for reinstatement as a school. Elite Preparatory Academy saw this potential and decided to purchase the building to expand their private school system. This was to be the location for their new art school, the Maxim School of Design.

Having toured the building a number of times, it was clear that a number of upgrades inside and out would be required to create a modern and viable facility. It was apparent that there is a lot of potential and flexibility possible to allow the building to accommodate the academy's needs. There is a long term phasing plan to renovate and alter the interior areas to best suit the needs of the expanding curriculum and student body. The exterior also needed a refreshing to make the campus more attractive and reflect the sensibilities of an art based school.

Part of the process included obtaining the necessary approvals from the municipality for the proposed reuse. This included the refreshing of the facades, and improvements to parking, pedestrian circulation routes, and accessibility issues.
